Child's Play

“It’s just child’s play.” Have you ever heard that phrase before? Sometimes we describe things which we don’t take seriously as “child’s play.” It can have an almost demeaning connotation to it.

I’ve been meditating recently on the idea of playfulness in the classroom. In the words of Mr. Rogers, THE famous Mr. Rogers from children’s television, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from some serious learning. But for children, play IS serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.”

What a beautiful perspective! One of the things I love most about KKC is the emphasis on children learning through play. If you walk through the KKC halls on any given day you’ll see classroom after classroom where students are engaging with various colored shapes or coloring or building with blocks. Our little learners are learning through touch. All of their senses are being stimulated. Peals of laughter ring out giving voice to the joy of play in the midst of learning.

"Play is really the work of childhood."

Let’s capture this idea of play as worthwhile to our adult work as well. Maintaining the joy of discovery in the midst of our 9 to 5, exuding kindness through a smile in the office, turning our used paperwork into a free throw in the bin…let’s work hard at play in our daily lives!
