Like a Child

In Matthew 18:3 we read, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Setting the context for this Scripture, Jesus’ disciples were arguing amongst themselves asking, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Essentially, they were asking, Who is going to hold the highest position of greatness in Jesus’ Kingdom? They were concerned about their own greatness. Jesus sets a child as an example to them.
Children are humble. Children are dependent. Children are authentic. At Kids Kare, we celebrate children who play with humility, sharing their toys, building up other kids with their kind words, obeying their teacher’s instructions instead of doing what they want to do when they want to do it. It is such a joy to watch children learn how to talk. Children are so dependent on parents and teachers when it comes to communication. We say a word, they say that word back. We celebrate children carefully learning the letters of the alphabet and learning how to read. Children are so transparent. They wear their emotions on their face. Often with children, what you see is what you get.
Children are humble. Children are dependent. Children are authentic.
I’m so glad that Jesus came to earth as a baby and grew in wisdom and stature. He, who participated with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit in the creation of the world, humbled Himself and become nothing (Philippians 2:7). Jesus was completely unconcerned with the question of “Who is the greatest?” Jesus came to show us how to live! Let’s take up the picture of becoming like little children, walking humbly, authentically, and in dependence upon God our Father!
